Explore your photography in one the most pristine wild places on the planet

Botswana Workshop 2027

Northern Botswana. Landlocked and varied terrain with fingers of waterways intertwining with desert and forest environments, the country provides the perfect home to more than 150 species of mammals and more than 500 species of birds. From the floodplains of the Okavango Delta to the Moremi Wildlife Reserve to the banks of the Chobe River, this is a wildlife photographer’s paradise.

On this 10-night/11-day mobile photo safari, we will explore the natural wonders of Botswana at an unhurried pace in an uncrowded place. This vast area offers the rare feeling of travelling through untouched beauty, where the wildlife is comfortable and we will rarely be at sightings with more than a few other vehicles. More often, we will be alone with the animals and our cameras.

Mobile camps run by a professional safari company offer a unique experience that lodge goers often envy. You simply cannot get closer to the animals. Meru-style tents (the classic safari tents) have ensuite bathrooms with camp showers while also providing each guest with privacy and comfort. Delicious food is ready for us in the morning before our first game drive and when we get back for lunch and dinner. Well-maintained safari vehicles are comfortable and safe, and limited numbers of guests per vehicle give us plenty of room for camera gear and to stretch our legs. This is less camping and more “glamping.”

We have scheduled this photo safari for the early dry season. This is a shoulder season when water is not yet scarce, when animals are migrating north to Chobe National Park and the river systems there, and tourists are fewer and farther between. Similar to autumn, trees are changing color and grasses are shorter, making it easier to spot animals.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 (April 26): Arrival in Johannesburg

Independent arrival in Johannesburg, shuttle to hotel to meet the group.

Our Botswana photo safari begins with pickups at OR Tambo Airport in Johannesburg, shuttling you to the hotel where we will meet, have dinner, and talk about the upcoming adventure.

Depending on your arrival time, you may wish to tour some of the historic sites in Johannesburg. Should you with to arrive earlier, please let us know and we can make arrangements to book you in the hotel ahead of time.

Day 2 (April 27): Flight to Maun, Botswana → Game Drive to Moremi Game Reserve

Meet our guide at Maun Airport and transfer to our private wilderness camp.

We will have breakfast at the hotel and then transfer to the airport via shuttle to catch our flight to Maun, Botswana. We will allow for plenty of time going through customs and passport control – OR Tambo is a very modern airport and there are opportunities to pick up last minute supplies there (sunglasses, hats, clothing, memory cards, etc.).

When we land in Maun, we will go through customs and passports control for Botswana, and then our private safari guides will meet us outside to load up the vehicles and hit the road.

The drive to our first campsite in Moremi will take several hours, but it also be our first game drive! This is a great opportunity to dial in settings and warm up your creative juices while taking in the wildlife we will encounter along the way.

Days 3–4 (April 28-29): Game Drives in Moremi Game Reserve

Morning and afternoon photography drives with elephants and predators

Our days in Moremi will be filled with morning and late afternoon game drives, with abundant time during the afternoon to relax and recharge.

While there are no guarantees about what we will see – wild animals will go where they want and they don’t answer to a spreadsheet – Moremi is prime lion and leopard territory, with abundant elephants and bird life.

Day 5 (April 30): Moremi → Game Drive to Khwai Concession

Scenic predator-rich transfer and arrival at our private Khwai camp.

We will hit the road shortly after breakfast for a transfer game drive to Khwai, another part of the Okavango Delta. We’ll take our time, stopping for tea in mid-morning and then a little later for lunch before we arrive at camp. The safari company will have already set up our tents and beds and we will have some time to relax. Time permitting, we may be able to go out for an evening game drive in this new area.

Days 6–7 (May 1-2): Game Drives in Khwai Concession

Wild dogs, lions, elephants, low-angle photography, optional mokoro excursion,

The Khwai Community Concession, situated next to the Moremi Game Reserve, is a leading example of sustainable eco-tourism in one of Botswana’s most renowned wildlife regions – the Okavango Delta.

Once a hunting concession, it was established by the local Khwai villagers. This community plays a vital role in the conservation and management of the area. Today, the concession is overseen by the Khwai Community Trust.

Khwai is an open, flexible area with stunning light — perfect for creative photography.

Day 8 (May 3): Khwai → Savuti

Transfer north into one of Africa’s legendary predator regions.

From Kwhai, we’ll head north into one of Africa’s legendary predator regions. Savuti is home to the famous Marsh Pride and the Renegades of the Northern Pride. There are also leopards and cheetah in the area, as well as large bull elephants and a good variety of birds.

This is also along the route of migrating mammals like zebra and wildebeest as they make their way toward the Chobe River during the dry season.

Days 9-10 (May 4-5): Savuti

High predator density, dramatic behavior, silhouettes, creative backlight.

Savuti (sometimes spelled Savute) is, technically, a marsh. Rather than water, though, the area features sandy plains, dead trees from past floods, and a remote safari experience. When water arrives, it floods and becomes a vast haven for wildlife. But when it is dry, animals congregate at the few water sources that exist. It has the makings for tense, dramatic encounters.

Day 11 (May 6): Savuti → Chobe Riverfront (Lodge)

Sunset river cruise with elephants, hippos and birds-in-flight photography.

After our two days in Savuti, we will transfer further north to the hearth of Chobe National Park, the Chobe River. Home to large herds of elephants, lions, antelope, hippos, and crocodiles, this is the capstone to our adventure.

Here, our final night will be in a lodge, giving us not only the opportunity to go out for a river cruise, but also to observe wildlife directly from the lodge’s decks. Elephants silhouetted against the sunset, grumpy hippos rearing up, and birds skipping over the water, grabbing insects for dinner all make for incredible viewing and, of course, photography.

Day 12 (May 7): Chobe → Kasane → Departure to Johannesburg

Breakfast at lodge. Morning game drive, time permitting. Group flight to Johannesburg, with group stay at hotel.

After a peaceful night’s sleep, we will wake for a filling breakfast. Depending on our flight time, we may squeeze in one more game drive to explore the immediate area around the lodge before heading to the airport to catch our flight back to Johannesburg.

On arrival and after clearing customs, we will shuttle to the hotel for one last group dinner and a night of story sharing and memories.

Day 13 (May 8): Independent departures from Johannesburg
As the last day of our adventure, you will leave (though you may not want to) to catch your flight home or to your next stop. After all, Cape Town is a short flight away. Or you may want to connect with a tour to one of South Africa’s many national parks.

About Botswana

The country, Africa’s oldest continuous democracy, has devoted 38% of its land to national parks, reserves, and wildlife management areas. The vast majority of these areas are unfenced, allowing animals to roam wild and free. A Botswana safari offers some of the most spectacular wildlife and wilderness experiences in Southern Africa, offering the rare feeling of travelling through an untouched area of immense beauty. From the evocative Kalahari Desert to the surreal Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, to the mopane forests on the banks of the Chobe River and the vast seasonal floodplains of the Okavango Delta, a Botswana safari is an unforgettable experience.

The jewel of Botswana, and one of the best wildlife regions in southern Africa, is the famous Okavango Delta (a UNESCO Heritage site), with the Moremi Wildlife Reserve at its heart. Most people regard Okavango and Moremi as ‘musts’ for anyone on safari in Botswana. Botswana is also home 130,000+ elephants, which means approximately 1.28 elephants per square km!

    A Typical Day on Safari

    Morning

You’ll be woken shortly before sunrise for freshly brewed coffee, tea, and breakfast. As soon as light starts breaking, you’ll depart on your morning game drive in search of the abundant wildlife. Midway through the game drive, you’ll stop for “morning tea” with tea, coffee, and biscuits before continuing the drive and slowly heading back to camp. After all, during the heat of the day when photographic light isn’t as good, many animals choose to relax in the shade.

    Midday

Depending on the morning’s action, you’ll arrive back at camp shortly before noon for a well-deserved lunch/brunch. The afternoon siesta is ideal for charging equipment, backing up photos, reading, and relaxing. Toward the end of this break, we’ll gather for a late afternoon snack.

    Afternoon

Following “afternoon tea,” you’ll head out for the afternoon game drive, typically a shorter excursion following up on the morning’s action. We’ll often stop in a scenic spot as the sun sets—unless wildlife activity is too good to leave!

    Evening

Return to camp where a crackling fire awaits. After a hot shower, relax with drinks while our expert bush chef prepares dinner cooked over open flames. After dinner, retire to your tent surrounded by the sounds of the African night.

      Accommodation

Your mobile camp features spacious walk-in Meru-style canvas tents with real camp beds and quality bedding. Each tent includes an en-suite bush bathroom with bucket shower (hot water on request) and private toilet.

The camp is set up in a private campsite designate only for Seacoast Photography School photo safari guests. Each campsite is setup with a canopied common area for meals and afternoon rest, relax, and collaboration. A campfire will also be set each day.

Meals on safari include breakfast, morning and afternoon tea, lunch, and dinner. Bottled drinking water is included (these are large bottles for dispensing into smaller bottles). Sundowners and dinner drinks are also included.

Charging your camera and other devices

While we are on safari, we will be able to charge batteries, laptops, tablets, and phones in the vehicles. We will also be able to charge them this way in camp, as well as via a generator.
